![]() Steam client's functions include game update automation, cloud storage for game progress, and community features such as direct messaging, in-game overlay functions and a virtual collectable marketplace. ![]() ![]() Steam offers various features, like digital rights management (DRM), game server matchmaking with Valve Anti-Cheat measures, social networking, and game streaming services. It was launched as a software client in September 2003 to provide game updates automatically for Valve's games, and expanded to distributing third-party titles in late 2005. Encouraging more gating of more 3rd party content behind the Great Steamwall is actively fuelling the fragmentation problem rather than be any solution to it.Steam is a video game digital distribution service and storefront from Valve. What matters is that it's hosted on a 3rd party site accessible to everyone regardless of where they bought the game, doesn't necessarily have to specifically be Nexus. Nexus is also but one mod site amongst many, eg,, or the multitude of individual sites (eg, smapi.io for Stardew Valley, TTLG forums for TFix, etc). Likewise with the Nexus hate, there's a huge difference between a simple forum login that does no ownership checks, vs obvious DRM (Steam client / SteamCMD) that blocks mod downloads if you don't own the game there. So "use SteamCMD" is zero substitute for 3rd party hosting sites that let you download the mod files (whether you own the Steam version or not) so that you can add them to GOG / retail versions. For many games, you can't download Steam mods via their client if you don't own the game you're trying to mod on Steam. Unless I'm missing something, the SteamCMD is the official Command Line client for people who own Steam content and want to download them without the main GUI client. Like Starbound whose entire communty lives or dies on mods. Problem is, some games have anonymous downloads locked out, for whatever baffling reason. I have a better suggestion: Use the tools of the trade that Valve provides. And personally, I have enough accounts, I don't need another key on my keyright. ![]()
